In 1991 I spent that summer working at Churchill Downs located in Louisville, Kentucky U.S.A. Each workday, when my work with the horses was done. To relax and enjoy some fun leisure time. I enjoyed putting together a jigsaw puzzle that I had purchased. The jigsaw puzzle was a beautiful photo of the Brooklyn Bridge and the World Trade Center located in NYC, in lower Manhattan. Myself, and a few friends at the racetrack. Enjoyed the challenge of putting the puzzle together. It was a fun challenging experience. At the same time enjoying some great comradery . I was delighted with the results. When the jigsaw puzzle was finally completed. Bringing the beautiful scene of lower Manhattan and the World Trade Center to life. I celebrated by having the Jigsaw Puzzle framed and it still proudly hangs in my bedroom. A constant reminding of Happy Days from my past! Always remember the good days. Enjoying those happy memories. That could create more happiness to come in the future!Donald Whttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06185305201510162046noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3920276093963865914.post-62240566042199278152021-01-17T13:44:00.007-08:002021-01-21T20:27:55.786-08:00Sleepy Eyes Todd- Will Travel, Will Win

I have become a very big fan of a very fine racehorse named "Sleepy Eyes Todd". I was introduced to Sleepy Eyes Todd when was a 3 year old. Todd ran a great race and was a good and determined second place finish to Owendale in the Oklahoma Derby in 2019. Sleepy Eyes Todd connections decided to run him back in the $100,000 JEFFREY A. HAWK MEMORIAL to finish out his 3 year old campaign, at Remington Park. Jockey Ry Eikelberry received the mount. Ry rode a perfect race. Helping Todd run a huge race beating a decent field of older horses.

Then in 2020 during the problematic Covid 19 year! We enjoyed watching the racing during the Spring Meet at Fonner Park, located in Grand Isle Nebraska. Sleepy Eyes Todd would travel to Nebraska. We would get to enjoy watching Todd win! Sleepy Eyes Todd would lead from gate to wire to a 6 ½-length victory in the $54,000 Bosselman / Gus Fonner Stakes. Very well ridden by Jockey Quincy Hamilton.

Then in the summer Sleepy Eyes Todd exciting year would continue. This time traveling to the U.S.A. State of West Virginia, and to Charles Town Racecourse for running of the $600,000 Grade 2 Charles Town Classic. Showing an enjoyment of running at less then a mile (Bull Ring) racetracks. Todd would again take complete control of this race and win big, pulling away to win by 7 lengths. Sleepy Eyes Todd was ridden to victory by jockey Carlos Delgado.

Then on Breeders Cup Day, at Keeneland Race Course. Located in Lexington, Kentucky. Sleepy Eyes Todd would compete in $150,000 Lafayette Stakes. Todd would be ridden with lots of confidence by Joel Rosario. Sleep Eyes Todd would show no speed in this race. At the 3/8 pole. Todd would be trailing the field in last place! However when the real race began to unfold. Sleepy Eyes Todd would rally and win going away in convincing style. Pulling away to win the Lafayette Stakes by 1 1/2 lengths. Running the 7 furlongs in 1:21.4.

Then to finish out an outstanding year of traveling, running and winning. Sleepy Eyes Todd and his connections. Would take Todd to south Florida and Gulfstream Park. To compete in the Mr. Prospector Stakes race. Again at the 7 furlong distance. Sleepy Eyes Todd would run a beautiful tactical race. Coming from a comfortable position in 4th place. To rally and hold off a late charge by the talented Firenze Fire. To win the $100,000 Mr. Prospector Stakes by 1/2 length. Sleepy Eyes Todd would receive and beautifully timed ride by very talented jockey Tyler Gaffalione.
Sleepy Eyes Todd is eying the Pegasus World Cup Championship Invitational. Taking place at Gulfstream Park in Hallandale Beach on Saturday, January 23, 2021. I wish Todd well and look forward watching Sleepy Eyes Todd, compete in this major race. This gallant and courageous racehorse. Does deserve to race in this prestigious Grade 1 Race.

Another great and talented racehorse that I became a fan of. Was the champion sprinter named "Housebuster". I use to love watch Housebuster race. The speedy and determined son of Mt. Livermore. Use to show blazing speed from the starting gate. Then keep very aggressive fighting with and antagonizing his opponents to the end of the race. That can explain why Housebuster was voted champion Sprinter in the United States 2 consecutive years 1990 and 1991. I got the fun experience of being around this great racehorse a little bit. As a good friend of mine Joe was the final groom to look after Housebuster in his great career. Housebuster apeared to be a kind and very relaxed gentleman off of the racetrack. Sadly Housebuster was badly injured in the running of the 1991 running of the Breeders Cup Sprint. Becasue of the substained inury. It ended Housebuster's amazing career. I can only assume that Hall of Jockey Craig Perret enjoyed and loved to ride this great racehorse! Trainer Warren A. (Jimmy) Croll Jr. did a wonderful job developing and directing Housbuster, to a "Hall of Fame" career!!!

Today doing some rummaging around the house. I discovered some excellent photos of one of the best racehorses that was ever part of the Sheldon Wolfe Racing Stable. His name was Bull Myson. My father Sheldon purchased him from the Keeneland Fall yearling sale for a nominal amount. Bull Myson was sired a European Horse name Peterhof.
Bull Myson was a very nice horse to work with and be around. He was very fast and talneted. One of my biggest disappointment working in the horse racing business. That we failed to win at least one Stakes Race with Bull Myson.
However Bull Myson will always be a very pleasant memory of my days working in The Sport of Kings.
Bull Myson debut occurred on a beautiful Spring day at Greenwood Racetrack. Which use to exist in the eastern beaches area of Toronto. The date was April 2, 1989. The person who was photographer for these great photos is unknown. Bull Myson was ridden to victory by jockey Irwin Driedger.

One of the greatest Thoroughbreds to entertain the racing world to the Max. Was the great "John Henry"! Hall of Fame trainer Ron McAnally also became a household name in the racing world. With the success and status achieved by this fantastic champion! One of the greatest champions in the history of Thoroughbred Horse Racing!

I enjoyed many times in the 1980's watching this fantastic and determined racehorse race! I even had the enjoyment of meeting John Henry in his retirement at the Kentucky Horse Park, located in Lexington!

Up next is another of my personal favorite Kentucky Derby winners! Unlike the great front running speed victory of "Spend A Buck" in the 1985 Derby. The gray "Gato Del Sol" came from dead last in the field of 19 runners. To take the lead one eighth of a mile from the finish line, to win the 1982 Kentucky Derby. Confidently ridden by "Hall of Fame" jockey Eddie Delahoussaye. Gato Del Sol which is Spanish for "Cat of the Sun" was allowed to settle and relax behind the large field at Churchill Downs. Gato Del Sol also had the almost impossible task of winning the 1 1/4 race from the 19th post position. Eddie Delahoussaye would articulate a massive rally down the backstretch run at Churchill Downs. Bringing Gato Del Sol into contention reaching the 1/4 mile pole. In the run to the finish line. Gato Del Sol would turn away any challengers to pull away and win the Derby by 2 1/2 lengths and pay $44.40 for a $2 win bet. Gato Del Sol's come from behind victory. Will remain one of the best in the history of the Kentucky Derby!

Eddie Delahoussaye will also be featured on this blog. In the best jockey section!
The above photo is the photo finish between #3 Norcliffe & #4 Lucky Conn. The 9th race August 26, 1976. At Fort Erie Racetrack.

It is always fun to remember and relive happy days from our past. This very happy day took place during the summer of 1976. The date was August 26, 1976. The Wolfe family was racing at the Fort Erie Summer Meet.
My older brother John and I really had no plans to attend the races at the historic Fort Erie Racetrack. On this beautiful summer day. But then suddenly our plan for the day did take a sudden change in direction. As we both wound up at the racetrack to try and try our luck on betting on a few of the races.

By the time we arrived at the racetrack. They were getting ready to run the 5th race at Fort Erie. Lucky for John and I. Astute veteran horse trainer and friend of my mom and dad. Owner-trainer Norm Fletcher was running one of his more reliable steeds. A horse named "Crafty Nantallah". John and I were not very prepared to bet on the races on this day. As between the two of us. We were only able to scrounge together a mere $5. But if your luck is working for you. That is really all the money you will need at the racetrack. As I recall Crafty Nantallah was a hard knocking and very reliable claiming horse. In which trainer Norman Fletcher was know for. We quickly looked at the racing form and sized up the horses in the field of the 5th race. Crafty Nantallah looked like a winner in the paddock. So we placed a $4 bet on Crafty Nantallah. Two dollars to win, and two dollars to show.. Crafty Nantallah was sent off of odds at 8 to 1. It was 6 1/2 furlong race and a very exciting start of our day at the track. As Crafty Nantallah stalked in great position for the first half mile of the race. Turing into the home stretch Crafty Nantallah would blow by the front running and win the race. Pulling away by 2 1/2 lengths! Our $5 had now grown to almost $25. We were on our way!

The 6th race on the Fort Erie card was also a field of hard knocking claiming horses. Our next wager would be on the old and classy Thoroughbred named "Dream Thoughts". What a perfect name for our next selection. Dream Thoughts was trained by another well respected conditioner working on the Ontario circuit named John Ainsley. Dream Thoughts would be ridden by veteran jockey John Bell. We would place a $20 on Dream Thoughts. $10 to win and $10 to show. Dream Thoughts ran an outstanding race and just got beat in a photo finish by a nose. We still cashed the show bet on Dream Thoughts and made a slight profit on the race.

Now we were going to bet on race 7. It was a a non winner of two 3 year old filly race. Champion trainer Lou Cavalaris was running the Gardiner Farm filly "Princess Matilda". Who was the favorite in the race. Being ridden by leading rider Jeffery Fell. My brother John recalls we bet $10 to win on Princess Matilda. Who won the race. Winning the race with authority. Bringing our bankroll up to $35.

Race 8 would prove to be another very exciting race. Which involved a two year old named "The Third Sign". This two year old colt was also being ridden by leading and champion jockey "Jeffery Fell". Trying very hard to make this an exciting and winning day. John and I wagered $20 to win on "The Third Sign". Jeffery rode "The Third Sign" to an exciting head victory. Which gave us a very profitable day at the track. This was really very unexpected. When the day had begun. The Third Sign paid $7.80. Bringing our bankroll to $90!

Now the finally on this dream day at the racetrack! The 9th and final race on the race card was the prep race for the second leg of the Canadian Triple Crown.Which is the "Prince Of Wales" Stakes. 1976 Queens Plate winner Norcliffe was the heavy pre-race favorite to win this small but talented field of 6 three year old horses. The race was 1 1/16 on the turf. One of the contenders in the field was from the "Conn Smythe barn and trained by Donnie Walker. Which was their best 3 year named "Lucky Conn". Lucky Conn was being ridden by apprentice jockey Michael Quong. This important race was a very big opportunity for the young career of Michael Quong. Because Michael had not won 5 races in his career yet. Lucky Conn would receive a 10 pound weight allowance. Giving Lucky Conn a chance to beat Norcliffe in this race. That is the way John and I concluded. After reviewing the facts. Reading the racing form. John and I predicted that Lucky Conn would be able to set the pace in the race. Which would be a moderate pace. Again increasing the chances for Lucky Conn to complete the upset of Norcliffe. John and I were confident with our decision and bet $80 to win on Lucky Conn. Which was a lot to wager for two young guys still going to school. But we took our chance made our decision to "Let It Ride"!

The race started with John and I pumped for a major winning day at the track very possible now. Lucky Conn and his rider Michael Quong sprang out of the starting gate. Just the way we had predicted the race would be run. Lucky Conn and Michael controlled the pace in the run down the backstretch. With Norcliffe and Jeffery Fell running in a stalking position. Turning for home Lucky Conn still managed to hold Norcliffe at bay. As the Queen's Plate winner was starting to mount his challenge. To try and win the race. Now the pair had reached 1/8 of a mile pole from the finish line. Lucky Conn still held a slight advantage. But Norcliffe and Jeffery Fell were starting to wear the lead of Lucky Conn away. It now looked like the race was lost and our dream day at the track would end with a narrow defeat. To the Champion Norcliffe. However our dream day was not over yet! Young Michael Quong was not interested in losing this race. Michael just like a well seasoned pro. Changed the whip to his left hand and gave Lucky Conn a couple of good slaps! Lucky Conn responded and fought back! Turning a neck disadvantage. To regaining the lead away from Norcliffe. And in a desperate and thrilling confrontation. Holding on to beat Norcliffe by a nose!!! John and I were beyond happy after this exhilarating win by Lucky Conn and Michael Quong. John and I walked out of the Fort Erie Racetrack with over $550 in our pockets. And lots of joy in our hearts!

This race would be the 3rd win in the race riding career of jockey "Michael Quong". Norcliffe would come back in two weeks to win the Prince of Wales Stakes. From this day on. I would refer to Michael Quong as the Killer! The Giant Killer that is. Michael would go on to a successful jockey career on the tough Ontario Thoroughbred Circuit. Also wining lots of races for the Sheldon Wolfe racing stable!

On this unique list of my favorite Thoroughbred Race horses. I have to include a least one of my favorite Kentucky Derby Winners. That horse would be the winner of the Kentucky Derby in 1985. The winner that year was a terrific pure speed horse named "Spend A Buck". The yearly running of the Kentucky Derby on the first Saturday in May. Remains one of the highest honers that can be achieved in the horse racing business! Winning the run for the roses can be compared. To a baseball player winning the World Series. A Football Player winning the Super Bowel. Or a soccer player winning the World Cup of Football! I was thrilled when our wonderful horse 'Truth of It All" completed in the 1993 edition of the Kentucky Derby. I realized through my experience. What an important and prestigious horse-race the Derby is. Also how incredible hard it is to obtain a racehorse good enough to compete in this difficult equine test. Let alone how hard it is to win it!
The distance of the Kentucky Derby is 1 1/4 miles. Run on the first Saturday in May each year. Usually it draws a full field of 20 racehorses. This makes it even more difficult for the best horse in the race to win. Because so much can go terrible wrong in a big field of 20. Also trying to set the pace and lead all the way in the Kentucky Derby I would say is very difficult or impossible feat to accomplish. However on May 4th 1985 the great Thoroughbred "Spend A Buck". Would make the impossible task of setting blistering fractions during the entire 1 1/4 miles in the Derby. Also leading for every stride of the 1985 Kentucky Derby, look easy! The handsome big bay colt with Champion jockey Angel Cordero Jr. riding him. Went to the lead running the first 1/4 mile in 23 seconds. leading by 3 lengths around the Clubhouse turn. In the run down the backstretch. Spend a Buck would blister the opening 1/2 mile in 45.4 and open a 6 length lead. The 1985 "Run For The Roses" was really over at this point in the race. For Spend A Buck was never going to slow down and give a come from behind closer a chance to beat him. Spend A Buck would sizzle the 3/4 mile in 1:09 3/5 and command a 6 length advantage. With jockey Angel Cordero Jr. just steering him. When this fluent pair had reached the head of the stretch and scorched the mile at Churchill Downs in 1:34 4/5. It was now time for Angel Cordero Jr. to take off the cruise control on Spend a Buck and ask him to keep up his frantic pace! Which the pair did coasting home to the finish wire at Churchill Downs. Winning the Kentucky Derby by 5 3/4 lengths in a fishing time of 2:01.1/5. It was truly one of the greatest races that we had all witnessed on this May 4th in 1985, in horse racing history!

Next on the list of my all time favorite racehorses is "Bayakoa". Who hailed from Argentina and started her amazing racing career in her native country. After establishing herself as a grade one caliber racehorse. Bayakoa interests in Argentina sold her to Americans Janis and Frank Whitham. Bayakoa's trainer in the U.S.would be Hall of Fame Trainer Ron McAnally.
Bayakoa would prove to be one of the most prolific and consistent females racehorses to ever race in North America. Being ranked with the great race mares; Shuvee, Gamely, Affectionately, Azeri and Zenyatta! I did get to watch Bayaka race and win many times. I also enjoyed a major thrill. As when we shipped "Dance for Lucy" to Keeneland Racecourse in the Fall of 1989. We got to be neighbors with the great Bayakoa! Lucy responded by winning the prep race for Queen Elizabeth II Invitational, beating the D.Wayne Lucas trained "Darby Shuffle". That was a major thrill! Also watching Bayakoa win the prestigious "Spinster Stakes" race by 11 1/2 lengths was also very special. Bayakoa was famous for being very fast and aggressive while she raced.
Bayakoa would intimate and overwhelm her combatants into submission for a lot of her convincing victories. During Bayakoa's win in the 1990 Breeders Cup Female Championship Race. Bayakoa engaged "Go For Wand" turning into the strength! They battled head and head to the 1/16th pole from the finish line. Very sadly at that critical point in the race. Go For Wand suddenly broke a leg in the ensuing battle and had to be euthanized! Bayakoa went on to a 5 length victory. Horse racing is a great sport. But it is also an aggressive war between combatants. It was a very sad moment in horse racing history. That the great racehorse "Go For Wand" in her own right. Life had to come to an abrupt end in such a great physical contest!

Their are so many great horses that I have enjoyed to see race. During my time working at the racetrack. It is very hard to select all these special racehorses. That I would enjoy to remember and honor on my blog. I do have to write about the great race mare named "Personal Ensign". Who was the consummate champion in every detail! For Personal Ensign never lost a race in her brief 13 race career. Her career was cut short by a serious injury she endured as a two year old. Personal Ensign suffered a cracked pastern in her left hind leg. Dr. Bramlage inserted five screws in her left hind leg. Which put the rest of her racing career in jeopardy.

However Personal Ensign came back the following year in 1987 an also raced in 1988 and won all seven of her races. Which were all grade one Stake Races. Including beating males in the Whitney Handicap in Saratoga. Also Personal Ensign ended her spectacular career in dramatic style. Getting up in the final strides of the Breeders Cup Distaff. Beating Kentucky Derby winner "Winning Colors", by a slight nose. What an an emotional win that was created by Personal Ensign. I remember at the 1/8 pole. It looked like Winning Colors had Personal Ensign and her regular jockey Randy Romero beat. But like true champions they both refused to give up. Personal Ensign and Randy Romeo mounted a great comeback from there great courage. And gave all horse racing fans a special thrill, on that special day. That we will never never forget!
A great story that has to be told on this blog. Is the story of "Fourstardave". One of the greatest New York Bred thoroughbreds to ever race. Fourstardave achieved the almost impossible task of wining races at the historic and prestigious Saratoga Race Course for 8 consecutive years. From 1987 until 1994. Speed strength, determination, consistency and courage are all of the attributes that Dave possessed to achieve this almost impossible accomplishment! There is a saying in the horse racing business that is true. Which is "horses for courses". Fourstardave fell in love with Saratoga Race Course located in Saratoga Springs New York. The beauty and history of this wonderful place to race. Is not to be missed by horse racing people or fans of the sport. Dave certainly enjoyed home field advantage when he raced at the Spa! Their is really no difference for all great athletes both equine and human. They all love to complete, perform and to win!!! Fourstardave also reminds and sets an everlasting example to his human counterparts. It is not the fame and the money that are the biggest rewards for being blessed to be a star athlete. The reward is the fun of completing and winning in their sport. Also the joy of entertaining the fans and leaving them with the special memories, of the thrill of victory!!!!
One of the best riders who rode for the Sheldon Wolfe Racing stable. Was Jim Pantina. My dad met and became great friends with Jim as he took one of horses to winter race in New York City during the winter of 1982. Jim at that time was one of the top exercise riders working on the prestigious New Racing Circuit. My dad convinced Jim to move up to Toronto and work for the Sheldon Wolfe Barn to try and get rich and famous working together at Woodbine.

Jim was a real pleasure to work with. His wonderful sense of humor. Is one one of the fond memories of working with him. Laughter is one of the pleasures that keeps us going through the day to day grind of working and trying to survive in this world! Between Jim and my Dad. It was always a fun day at the barn!

Jim was the last exercise rider to get on the great racehorse "Forego" Through the on-line world. I recently got back in touch with Jim. Jim is now living and working in Lexington, Kentucky. During a recent conversation. We starting to reminisce about "Denis The Menace" are great horse "Truth of It All" who was Champion two year old in Canada, in 1992. Jim and his girlfriend Susan went to Hurstland Farm to see Denis. Happy to report Denis is still alive and well at age 24. I want to share with everyone. The great photos Jim took of Truth of It All!
Part of the fun of being involved in horse racing was racing at Ft. Erie racetrack for the summer meet. Which use to take place beginning in early July an ending on Labor Day. The meet use to coincide with Saratoga in New York state. While the elite of horse racing would be enjoying themselves at the "SPA". Toronto horseman and horse racing fans would be enjoying our lives in Ft. Erie. Located in the Niagara area and only 14 miles from famed Niagara Falls. We also were located around the same distance to the historic amusement park located in Crystal Beach. Also my brother John and I. Along with some other trackies would make a yearly trip to enjoy a day of racing at Finger Lakes racetrack located near Rochester New York.

Finger Lakes Racetrack's location is almost perfect. Located very close to the shores of Lake Canandaigua. Right in the heart of Finger Lakes Country. This simple and pure horse racing facility has hosted Thoroughbred horse racing since 1962. The track is know for being a "B" racetrack. Home to cheap claiming horses. Or to second class New York Breds. That can't cut it racing in the tough New York City Circuit.

That all changed when another "Big Grey" would arrive racing at Finger Lakes in 1977. Fio Rito would forever put Finger Lakes Racetrack on the map in horse racing history and would forever become the "Pride of Lake Country". Fio Rito like most very talented Thoroughbreds was a combination of speed and stamina. Fio Rito use to like to dazzle his opponents with his pure speed. Then dare his opponents to try and to beat him.

This worked 28 times in his 50 race career. Fio Rito became the star of Finger Lakes. The highlight of his brilliant racing career came when owner Ray Lecesse and trainer Micahel S. Ferraro shipped the "Pride of Lake Country" to Saratoga to compete in the 1981 Whitney Handicap. The New York City horsemen, horse racing fans, and racing experts. Gave Fio Rito and his regular jockey Leslie Hulet very little chance of winning or doing well racing at Saratoga. The popular opinion was that Fio Rito and Leslie Hulet were stars at Finger Lakes. But did not belong racing in the big time.

I was certainly a fan of Fio Rito going into the 1981 Whitney. I always enjoyed cheering for the underdog. As a die hard horse racing fan, I was delighted with the results. I remember watching this race on close circuit T.V. in the betting room. Located in the barn area of Ft. Erie Racetrack. There was concern prior to the start of the Whitney. When an anxious Fio Rito broke through the gate, prior to the start. Only the excellent work of the assistant starter. Who loaded Fio Rito into the starting gate. Also the great work of jockey Les Hulet. Prevented a negative outcome for "The Pride of Lake Country". The Big Grey was reloaded into the starting gate. The race began. With speed and confidence. Fio Rito and Les Hulet took command of the race from the outset. Dominated the pace in the run down the backstretch. Then held off some determined challenges in the run to the finish line to win the the Whitney by 1/2 length. Giving Lake Country a huge victory! Proving that Fio Rito and Leslie Hulet did belong competing the major leagues!
The year 1979 would also add another fantastic horse in Thoroughbred Racing history. As "The Big Gray" Spectacular Bid would come from Maryland. To leave an everlasting memory in the hearts of racing fans. Strong courageous and with electrifying moves to win races with ease. His name Spectacular Bid would be so appropriate for him!

Speculator Bid would also give young jockey Ronnie Franklin. The greatest races of his career. In The Big Grey's two campaign in 1978. The pair would combine for 7 wins from 9 races. They would win the; The Champagne, The Young America, and The Laurel Futurity. In winning the Laurel Futurity. The Bid and Ronnie Franklin would set a new track record covering the 1 1/16 distance in a speedy 1:41 3/5 seconds. A very rare achievement for a two year old to accomplish.

In Spectacular Bid's 3 year old racing campaign (1979). The big grey would prepare beautifully for the triple crown winning the Hutchinson Stakes and the Florida Derby. Then Spectacular under the riding of Ronnie Franklin would romp to victory in The Kentucky Derby and come back to win the Preakness in his home state of Maryland. Only to finish a disappointing 3rd in the Belmont. Ending his hope of winning the triple crown.

However Spectator Bid would come back as a 4 year old. The Bid would dominate his competition as an older horse. Winning the; Strub Series, San Fernando Stakes, Santa Anita Handicap, Mervyn Leroy Handicap, California Stakes, Washington Park Handicap, Amony L. Haskell Handicap, and the Woodward. Spectacular Bid would end his career with 26 wins from a 30 race career. Delighting horse racing fans that had the fun of watching him run and win races.
Who knows if horse racing will ever have another. Also the great racehorse Alydar who was the nemesis for Affirmed in all three of his Triple Crown victories. The game and talented Alydar finally defeated Affirmed (through disqualification)in the 1978 Travers stakes run at Saratoga. Jockey Laffit Pincay who was filling in for the injured Steve Cauthen riding Affirmed. Cut off Alydar as he was challenging Affirmed from the inside in the race approaching the 1/4 pole. Alydar never gave up. Rallied to finish 2nd in the race. But was awarded victory after the stewards sttuided the films of the race.
Got to enjoy the career of "Seattle Slew". One of the all time greatest Thoroughbreds in racing history.

Pure speed, power and endurance. Seattle Slew had it all. This great horse racing champion came from very humble beginning. Also his barn nick-name was "Baby Huey". Seattle Slew's owners were Karen and Mickey Taylor. Who purchased Seattle Slew at the Keeneland Fall Sale for on $17,000. The Taylor's really hit the jackpot when they purchased him.
The Taylor's would hire friend and former Steeplechase jockey Billy Turner, to train Seattle Slew. Which was a great decision. As Billy turner showed a lot of patience with "The Slew". Usually owners and trainers that don't push there young racehorses. Are greatly rewarded later in there careers. Seattle Slew was undefeated in his 3 races as a two year old. His last race at two would be the "Champagne Stakes". Where "Baby Huey" trounced his competitors. Winning the race by 9 3/4 lengths. By doing so was voted "2 Year Old Champion" in the U.S. in 1976. Also making Seattle Slew the heavy favorite for the Kentucky Derby in 1977.

Seattle Slew made his first race as a 3 year old. On March 9, 1977 at Hialeah Racetrack located in Florida. My mom and dad were both at the races on that day. They were wintering our horses in Florida. Seattle Slew set all the fractions and pulled away to win his 1977 debut by 9 lengths. My parents were so impressed with Seattle Slew's performance. They were very confidant that they had just witnessed one of horse racing greatest, of all time.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TpOX-IrL5do&list=PL4D44C4A7E722ABD4 (video of first 3 year old race)

Then Seattle Slew would go on to win the Flamingo Stakes and the Wood Memorial Stakes at Aqueduct. Before he swept the Triple Crown in impressive style. Becoming only the 10th racehorse to capture the triple crown. The first to accomplish this amazing feat with an undefeated record.

Adversity would strike this great champion as he was shipped to California to compete in the Swaps Stakes. A move not agree to by his trainer Billy Turner. Seattle Slew would suffer his first defeat, and come out of this race in poor condition. Ending his 3 year old campaign. Seattle Slew would still be voted Champion 3 Year Old and Horse of the Year honors.

Seattle Slew would come back in his 4 year old racing year. To run some fantastic races. To also prove that his was one of the best Thoroughbreds of all time. Both his regular trainer and jockey would be replaced. Doug Peterson would take over as his trainer. Regular rider Jean Cruguet would be replaced after a loss in the Paterson Handicap. A race run at the Meadowlands in New Jersey. Angel Cordero would take over as his regular jockey.

Big wins in the Woodward, Stuyvesant Handicap, and Marlboro Cup. Where Seattle Slew would defeat 1978 Triple Crown Champion Affirmed. Would earn him Champion Older horse in the U.S. honors. A courageous loss by a head to Exceller in 1978 Jockey Cup Gold Cup. There was tremendous speed in the race. Which set it up perfectly for the fast closing Exceller. However Seattle Slew proved what a fantastic racehorse he was. My mounting an unbelievable comeback. To narrowly loose this race. Proving again what a great horse he was!

Seattle Slew would retire with a record of;
Record 17:14-2-0
Earnings $1,208,726.
One of the greatest female Thoroughbred Racehorses of all time was Ruffian. Who came onto the horse-racing scene in 1974. A large filly of; stature, speed and determination. Ruffian won all of her brilliant 10 race career. Which tragically came to an abrupt end. In a match race with 1975 Kentucky Derby winner Foolish Pleasure. The final race of Ruffian took place on July 6th, 1975 at Belmont Park.
The highlights of Ruffian incredible career included; Outstanding 2 year old filly in North America is 1974, Champion 3 year old filly in 1975, Winning the triple crown for fillies in 1975, average winning margin was 8 1/3 lengths, Ruffian set a new stakes record in each of the 8 stakes races she won, Ruffian was on the lead at every call in her ten race winning career.

Sadly Ruffian injured herself in the Match Race with Foolish Pleasure. The injured occurred just past the half mile pole in the race. Ruffian was 1/2 length in front in the race, as the fatal injury occurred. Jockey Jacinto Vasquez could not pull up Ruffian to try and minimize the injury. An attempt was made to save Ruffian life. However it failed, as the attending veterinarians were forced to euthanize her. It was a huge loss for horse-racing. The tragic end to one of the greatest competitors in horse racing history. Ruffian was buried in the infield of Belmont Park. Her head pointing towards the finish line. Ruffian will never be forgotten!

One of the greatest Thoroughbred Racehorses of all time. Is the gallant Red Rum. The writers in Hollywood. Could not of made the Cinderella story of Red Rum. Even close to being as dramatic. As it actually happened in real life.

Red Rum was a Irish Bred who was foaled May 3 1965. Red Rum's father was Quorum. Who was at his best running the mile distance. Red Rum mother was "Mared". Who was a failure as a racehorse. Mared first foal was Red Rum. The rest of her offspring. Did not fair very well on the racetrack.

Red Rum career did not get off to a very dramatic start as he won his first race a the 5 furlong distance. Barely winning facing mediocre company by a desperate nose. When Red Rum got older, and continued to struggle with the shorter speed based races. Red Rum's handlers made the decision to convert him to Steeplechase racing. In these races. Speed is not required. The ability to jump and to have the heart and stamina. To complete at the marathon distances are the necessary skills. Red Rum did show early promise. Competing in his new equine sport. However after suffering a serious hoof injury. His life and racing career now looked in jeopardy.

Enter Ginger McCain. Struggling horse trainer from Southport England. Who was supplementing his income. By selling used cars, and driving a taxi. To make financial ends meet. Enter Mr. Noel Le Mare. The 84 year old horse owner. Who had accomplished everything he ever sought after in his life. Except owning the winner of a Grand National Steeplechase. The toughest horse-race to win. In the world of horse racing.

Ginger McCain and Noel Le Mare met. As Noel Le Mare would be a regular passenger in Ginger McCain's cab. They would talk horse racing. Soon a friendship would develop between both men. To the point. That Mr. Le Mare now wanted Ginger McCain to train a horse for him. By this time Red Rum had recovered from his serious hoof injury. However his connections had now decided to give up on him. And put Red Rum into a auction sale. Fate works in strange ways. As Ginger McCain showed up at the sale. With money to buy a steeplechase prospect for Mr. Noel Le Mare in 1972. Ginger McCain did select and purchased Red Rum for Mr. Le Mare.

Because Ginger McCain was a struggling trainer. He galloped and trained all his racehorses on the beach in Southport. This was perfect news for Red Rum. Who was still trying to resume his racing career after suffering the serious hoof injury. In fact when Ginger McCain started to train Red Rum. He did have some concern about Red Rum soundness. After returning from a gallop showing signs of lameness. Ginger McCain had his exercise rider stroll Red Rum into the sea. The cold salt water had now cured anymore problems with the injured hoof. It was now time for Red Rum career to take flight. Now it was time for magic!!!

The Grand National Steeplechase. Run at "Aintree" Racecourse. Located in Liverpool, England. Is one of the toughest horse races ever devised. The distance is 4 1/2 miles. The horses are also required to also complete 30 jumps. That are part of this true test of endurance and courage. The horses that compete in the Grand National. Are required to complete two circuits of Aintree. Do decide who the winner will be.

During the Spring 1973 Steeplechase season in England. Red Rum had started to show signs of becoming a star. To the point where he was now one of the major contenders to compete in the 1973 Grand National. This race in 1973. Was truly the beginning one of the best stories in the history of professional athletics. During the race. Red Rum moved up after the first circuit and started to hound the front runner "Chrisp". Who was a champion steeplechaser form Australia. Who had opened a commanding lead. To the point where Chrisp had widened to a 15 length lead. Going into the final quarter mile in the race. It looked like Red Rum and his jockey Brian Fletcher were going to have to settle for second. However one of the greatest comebacks in sports history was about to take place. The final 1/16 of the race. Chrisp started to tire badly. Red Rum had keep up his pace. In the final few yards. Red Rum had won the Grand National in dramatic style, beating Chrisp by a head. The town of Southport had plenty to cheer about. There hometown based racehorse. Had just won the Grand National. Mr. Noel Le Mare's unfulfilled dream. Had finally come true!!!

However this fantastic story was just the beginning. For Red Rum was entered back in 1974 Grand National. As the favorite to win the race. Red Rum ran a flawless race. Winning the Grand National two years in a row. A very rare event. As it is so tough for a brave racehorse to finish the course at Aintree in the Grand National. Let alone win two in a row.

No horse had ever won the Grand National Steeplechase 3 times. Could Red Rum be the first to complete the hat trick. To accomplish the impossible. Red Rum would finish second in the Grand National in 1975 and 1976. In very determined and game efforts.

Red Rum the "Master of Aintree" would be back in 1977 for one final try to win his 3rd National. At this point in my life. I was a hard core horse racing fan. I was aware of Red Rum. However we received very little T.V. coverage of international racing in those days. However I was lucky to catch the 1977 Grand National Steeplechase. That was shown on "Wide World of Sports". I was treated to a special moment in horse racing and sports history. As Red Rum who was now completing at age 12. Took control of the 1977 Grand National. Pulling away to win by a good margin. Under the handling of jockey Tommy Stack. Who had replaced Brian Fletcher for the race. Aintree was packed with horse racing fans for what would be Red Rum's final Grand National. When Red Rum made the lead with two jumps to go in the race. The racing fans had become delirious with emotion. Red Rum run through the home stretch was electric! As he had won the Grand National 3 times! There was not a dry eye of anyone. Who was part of this great event. Red Rum was a rare equine athlete. Rummy was one of a kind!
Out of Chicago came another horse racing legend. A horse that was never going to compete or win a stakes race. But none the less horse racing fans loved and respected him very much!

His name was Maxwell G. He came from Washington State. Where he was foaled in 1962. Maxwell G never made the races until he was a 4 year old. When he finally broke his maiden in 1965. Through the late 1960's Maxwell G would turn into a very consistent claiming horse. Winning six races as a 6 year old from 24 starts. Then 5 winning races in 1969 from 29 starts. Durability and a late closing charge would become his trademark.

Then on September 22, 1970. Trainer Richard Hazelton claimed Maxwell G for $6,250. A great horse racing partnership had been formed. Creating a winning partnership. That would delight horsing fans for years to come. Richard Hazelton who was from Arizona. Had already established himself as a top Thoroughbred conditioner. A hoof problem that had been plaguing Maxwell G. Had to be corrected and constantly maintained for Max's racing career to continue to be successful. Trainer Richard Hazelton was up to the task. As Richard proved to be a highly prolific trainer. Who was known for a hands on approach to the horses under his care. Who also excelled at working with older racehorses. The Maxwell G. Richard Hazelton combination would combine for 31 wins from age 9 up to age 16.

Maxwell G won a race at Turf Paradise in Arizona at age 16. An age when most racehorses are retired or there lives have already ended.

Truly racing fans of the 1960's and 1970's. Were so lucky to have a colorful and long lasting racehorse in Maxwell G. Which truly made the "Sport of Kings" a very popular spectator sport in North America. Maxwell G. was also rewarded with having a book written in his honor, by L.M. Schorsch. Maxwell G. retired from racing in 1977. Having raced 233 times. Which included 47 wins, 52 seconds, and 39 thirds. For career earning of $181,420.
With sadness I have to announce the passing of my father Sheldon Wolfe. Who succumb to the effects of pneumonia. On Wednesday May 29. My dad was 91 years of age.

My dad has fought a valiant battle to stay alive. After suffering a severe stroke. In early December 2002.

My brother and I are very fortunate to have been brought into this world. Also constantly supported by. Two fine and decent people (our parents). Who have given my brother and I. The great opportunity to enjoy our lives.

What an exciting a great life it has been. Which includes; Growing up on a beautiful farm in Maple, Ontario in the 1960's. Being involved in the Thoroughbred Horse Racing Industry. That provided us with genuine happy moments. That most people can only dream about every having and enjoying in there lives. Living in a conformable home for all my years. Also personally for me. The chance to travel and enjoy. Some of the exotic and beautiful places located on our planet "Earth".

One of my dad's greatest qualities was his humor. My father would always take delight in making people laugh. His presentation to deliver a joke or one liner was high quality. I always enjoyed my dad's humor. I often refereed to my father. "As the Henny Youngman of the racetrack". It will be a lasting memory for me. Also for all of the people who got to know Sheldon Wolfe.

I will finish this post. With a short funny story. That my dad use to enjoy to tell. "The Horse Trainer's Test".
"They would begin the test by putting 12 sanitized marbles in your mouth. Then they would start asking you various questions. When a question was answered correctly. You were allowed to split out one of the marbles. When you lost all of your marbles! Then were giving your horse trainer's licence."

My dad use to enjoy to quote the great comic Milton Berle "Always leave them laughing".

Thanks for a great life dad. You gave us all a very fun ride!

My brother John recently discovered a hat drawing that my dad created on Friday June 20th 1997. While enjoying dinner at a Swiss Chalet location in Brampton. Drawing hats was a favorite hobby of his!

Sadly my wonderful mother Charlotte Wolfe. Passed away suddenly of an apparent heart attack on the early evening of January 11. A huge loss to the Wolfe Family as we lost our family leader. Like any amazing woman. My mom was the heart and soul of our family. My mother's heath had been in decline after she suffered a broken hip. Due to a slip and fall accident she suffered 8 years ago.

Like always my mother handled adversity with bravery and class. Her determination to survive her serious injury was unrelenting. You see my mom survived two failed operations to try and repair her broken hip. Then she found herself in 2005 at Sunnybrook Hospital. Awaiting open heart surgery. To repair a blockage in her heart. So a another attempt could be made to repair a failed hip replacement operation.

I visibly remember going to see my mother after my mom survived the heart operation. My mother looked great and was now ready for her hip to finally be repaired. However there was a new challenge to overcome as Sunnybrooke Hospital wanted to send my mother back to the Brampton Hospital. To allow the Brampton Surgeon to revive her failed hip replacement.

My mother wanted no part of going back to be treated by the Brampton Hospital again. How could you blame her. Two failed operations at Brampton Hospital. Plus my mom was quickly discharged from the Brampton Hospital with a irregular heartbeat, after the hip replacement operation had failed! There was no way she was going back to Brampton for any further medical treatment.

Great family friend Saul M. and yours truly appealed to the upper management of Sunnybroook. To not send my mother back to Brampton Hospital for further medical treatment on her bad hip. But instead to allow the Sunnybrook Hospital hip and pelvic specialist Dr. Hans Kreader. To treat and revised my mom's failed hip replacement. A very fond memory. When a very down to earth and friendly Dr. Kreader walked into my mom's room. And said directly to her. "Don't worry Mrs. Wolfe. I will fix up your hip for you. And you will be able to walk again". Tears of joy! Just rolled down the face of my mom and I. As Dr. Kreader left her room. Dr. Kreader is a man of his word. As Dr. Kreader successfully repaired my mother's hip. So she was able to walk and continued to live her life. Until it sadly ended on January 11, 2013. I will always have fond memories for the great people who fought for my mother. So she could survive and we got to enjoy her for the last 8 years.

My mother got to enjoy a special life. And thankfully I got to be a part of it. A hard working, kind and loving person her whole life. I was very lucky and proud to be her son. My mother who loved to work, to make good things happen. Who loved to be a mother, and was always a source of inspiration. As she fit the part of a real good role model as a fine person.

My mom was originally a city girl. Who had no experience and actually had a fear of animals. When she married my father Sheldon Wolfe in 1958. My dad's plan was to take a shot to be a Thoroughbred Horse Trainer. My mom was excited about her new life with her husband Sheldon and her two sons, John and Donny. But was she up to the task of handling and looking after horses. Well my mom quickly excelled at her new life. As she just loved all of the animals that would become a part of our lives. All the cats, dogs and the horses. My mom quickly became a accomplished horse woman. My mom looked after and ran "Woodglen Farm" for the 8 years we enjoyed living in the country in Maple. My mother also became barn manager for 24 of my dad's 30 year training career. My mom always made sure we did our best to look after the horses. My mom just loved being involved in the racing business. We never got rich. But we got to live a special life. Also created some rich memories to always enjoy!

My mom loved and supported her family. All the way to end of her life. My mother was always unselfish. Who always put the well being of her husband and her two sons. Ahead of her own. I as a loving son. Never stopped fighting for her. My mom never had to leave her home and move into a nursing facility. She did walk and make it up to her bedroom. Where she sadly passed away. But I am such a lucky guy to have enjoyed the life. Of such of a great and rare lady to be my mom!
The top picture is my mother in 1963. With our first broodmare "Esteemed". You can easily see how much she loved being a horsewoman!

The bottom pictures are; Truth Of It All winning the prep for the "Ohio Derby" in 1993. Then the great thrill of winning our first ever race at historic "Churchill Downs" with our fine race mare "Dance For Lucy" winning the first division of the "Cardinal" stakes race.

Most working class people work hard there whole life. We survive but are never credited for our contribution or are worth. That is sadly the way our human society works.
The movie stars, the politicians, the music stars, star athletes and the business enterpriser's. Get all the credit and recognition for making our quality of life, rewarding.

Well just to let you know there was a small dark bay horse named "Sagely". Who didn't care he was just working class. For Sagley contribution to "The Sport Of Kings" was monumental!
Just by doing his job well. Also that fact that Sagley loved doing it. Contributed to him running in 124 races over his 15 year racing career.

This is copied from the Finger Lakes Racetrack "Hall Of Fame" page as Sagley was inducted into there "HOF" in 1996.

1970 Dk. b.c. by Sage and Sand - Four Crown
51 Wins in 124 Starts from ages 2 to 16
Career Earnings: $116,196

1983 - New Track Record at Finger Lakes - 1 mile 3/16 in 1:59:4

Racing the majority of his 15 year racing career against modest claiming competition, Sagely became one of the few thoroughbreds in racing history to post 50 career victories. At the tender age of 14, Sagely earned his 50th victory with an eight-length romp in the first race at Finger Lakes on November 10, 1984. He won 17 of 22 starts for trainer Bill Strange, who brought Sagely to Finger Lakes in 1975. From 1982 through his retirement in 1986, Sagely won 39 races at Finger Lakes - 26 times after turning 11 years old in 1981. From 1981 through 1984, he won at least six races each year. Sagely won all four starts in 1975, and was seven-for-seven in 1977. During a three-year stretch from 1975 through 1977, he finished no worse than second, while winning 12 of 14 starts. Sagely's longevity was matched by his courage and desire to compete.

I would enjoy to hear anybody who knew Sagley or was a fan of this classy and special Thoroughbred. I did enjoy the special privilege of attending Finger Lakes Racetrack and watch Sagley do what he enjoyed to do best. Win a horse race!
One of the treats of being a horse racing fan through the 1970s. That we were entertained with 3 triple crown winners. Secretariat who was affectionately know as "Big Red" was a very strong and handsome son of Bold Ruler out of the mare Somethingroyal by Princequillo. Was considered one of the most talented Thoroughbreds in Racing history. Yes and we got to enjoy his exciting career.

It was just fate that Big Reds' owner Penny Tweedy came up with Secretariat. As she won him in the flip of a coin deal with Owner Breeder Ogden Phipps. Secretariat who was honored with the same nickname as racing legend "Man o' War. Went to live up to that honor as Secretariat became the first U.S. Triple Crown Winner in 25 years, in 1973.

In winning the; Kentucky Derby, The Preakness, and the Belmont. Big Red completed the great accomplishment in amazing style as he set record times for winning the 3 races. The Kentucky Derby (1:59.4), The Preakness (1:53), and the Belmont (2:24). Which Secretariat won the Belmont by an unbelievable 31 lengths.

Secretariat was trained by Canadian Trainer Lucien Laurin. Big Reds' race record; 21 starts:16 wins-3 seconds- one third. Secretariat regular pilot was famous Canadian jockey Ron Turcotte.

Secretariat won 15 stake races;
Sanford Stakes (1972)
Hopeful Stakes (1972)
Futurity Stakes (1972)
Laurel Futurity (1972)
Garden State Futurity (1972)
Bay Shore Stakes (1973)
Gotham Stakes (1973)
Arlington Invitational (1973)
Marlboro Cup (1973)
Man o' War Stakes (1973)
Canadian International (1973)
American Classic Race wins:
Kentucky Derby (1973)
Preakness Stakes (1973)
Belmont Stakes (1973)

We Canadian Racing fans were given the chance of a lifetime. As Secretariat would make the final start of his illustrious career, at Woodbine. As Big Red would race and win the Canadian International Championship. I was at Woodbine for Secretariat final race. It was one of my special memories of being a horse racing fan!
One of all time best Canadian Bred Thoroughbred runners of all time. Was great turf mare "Belle Geste". Truly a legend in Ontario Racing. And for good reason for Belle
Geste was a true grade one champion. It takes a rare and exceptional female to be able to compete on even terms with male horses. Especially in grade one company. Belle Geste was able to do and beat some very talented male horses. To win some very important races.

Belle Geste was owned by Beatrice and Bill Latimer of Toronto. Belle was trained by Carl Chapman and her regular jockey was Noel Turcotte. It was always a big deal when Belle Geste went to the starting gate for a race. Like any star performer. Belle Geste was exciting to watch race and seldom disappointed her fans.

One of Belle Geste greatest races was in the 1972 Canadian Championship. Back in the good old days. The Canadian Championship use to run at the distance of 1 5/8 miles on the turf, until 1986. As it now runs at the 1 1/2 distance on the turf. Belle Geste came very close to winning the most coveted race in Canada. Sure the Queens Plate is an important race. But the best horses always competed in the C.I.C. Droll Role with Hall Of Fame jockey Braulio Baeza were both all out to narrowly defeat Belle Geste to win the Canadian International Championship. The bleachers in the barn area were packed that fall day with fans. Elated with Belle Geste exceptional race! A tremendous race that was great was a good as a win! What a tremendous athlete Belle Geste was!

Belle Geste was only an $11,000 yearling purchase. Belle Geste won 22 of her 41 races. With 8 victories coming in stake races. Belle Geste defeated Kennedy Road to win the Maturity States in 1972. Setting a track record in doing so. Stopping the clock in 2:01.2. Belle Geste was by "The Scoundrel-French Safari". Belle was a true champion racehorse.
